A smooth path is welcome. A safe crossing at its end can be what makes the whole journey possible. England’s latest National Cycle Network funding package is aimed at both those kinds of improvement, alongside the less glamorous job of keeping existing routes usable.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander announced £104 million on 22 September 2026 at Active Travel England’s Making Active Places conference in Manchester. The four-year package goes to the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust for network improvements in England. It is a funding commitment, not an announcement that every proposed route has opened.

Where the money goes and what remains to be decided
The programme covers hundreds of projects and network improvements, including resurfacing, crossings, barrier removal and repairs to bridges and tunnels. The National Cycle Network is UK-wide, but this funding announcement applies to England. It is not an allocation of £104 million to every nation or a guarantee of work on every route.
The announcement places the package alongside the ambition to establish foundations for a national active-travel network by 2030. It does not provide a complete site-by-site construction timetable. For a particular journey, look for a named scheme and delivery notice from the relevant authority or network partner before assuming a path is open or upgraded.
What it means for your local route
A national total cannot tell you when a particular pothole, bridge or crossing will be fixed. Look for a named local project, its scope and its delivery timetable. A useful proposal should show the connections into schools, stations, shops or workplaces as well as the path itself.
When responding to a consultation, be specific. Describe the entrance your cycle cannot pass through, the junction that interrupts your journey or the surface that becomes difficult in bad weather. That gives planners something concrete to address.
Our view: reliability deserves a headline too
We welcome investment in routes people can use for complete journeys. Keeping a bridge open and a surface rideable may attract less attention than a ribbon-cutting, but these are the things that make cycling a dependable choice. The test of this funding will be what it changes on the ground.
