Giant SureLock key recall: the illuminated key is the affected part

An 8 October US recall concerns the button battery in certain illuminated SureLock keys. Check the official identifiers and local remedy.

Stop using an affected Giant SureLock illuminated key and keep it away from children. The 8 October 2026 US recall concerns the accessible button battery inside certain black-and-white keys, rather than a reported failure of the lock mechanism.

Giant issued the notice with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The regulator also reports affected Canadian sales. The market distinction matters for UK readers: the notice does not establish a UK recall or a UK refund entitlement.

What is recalled?

The US notice covers black-and-white LED-light keys (keys with a small built-in light) included with specified SureLock sets. Its identification table gives the affected lock names and serial-number ranges; it locates the serial number underneath the lock. Do not decide from the SureLock name or photograph alone.

CPSC reports around 3,630 US units, plus 1,395 in Canada, and no reported incidents or injuries. Easily accessible button batteries present a swallowing hazard that can cause severe internal injury.

Contact and identification details

Giant’s US notice gives Recall@GiantBicycle.com and (866) 458-2555 for queries, with telephone hours listed as Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm PST. The authorised retailer needs the complete lock purchase or a photograph of the lock’s date code to verify the remedy. Use the linked notices’ identification tables and illustrations: product numbers and date or serial codes should not be treated as interchangeable.

The $5 refund applies to return of the affected illuminated key through the US process. It is not a refund for the whole lock. Giant permits continued use of the lock and non-illuminated keys supplied with it. UK readers who bought abroad or are unsure about their key should seek advice from their local Giant retailer about the applicable market notice.

Check the key, then follow the remedy

  1. Use the official notices’ identification tables and illustrations to check the lock and illuminated key.
  2. Stop using an affected illuminated key and keep it out of children’s reach.
  3. For the US remedy, return it to an authorised Giant retailer with the complete lock purchase or a photograph of the identifying date code.

Giant describes a $5 refund for the affected key. Its US instructions permit continued use of the lock and supplied non-illuminated keys. Owners elsewhere should ask their local retailer which market notice and remedy apply.

Our view: precision helps owners act

“Bike lock recall” alone would leave an owner wondering whether their bicycle security still works. Here the key is the affected part, so that distinction belongs near the top. Follow the identification and return process rather than opening the key or improvising a battery fix.
